Coach Daryl Batey begins his first year as head coach of the Jaguar golf program. Currently, Batey is the Head Golf Professional at Charlie Yates Golf Course at East Lake. Batey, a Raleigh, N.C. native, graduated from South Carolina State University with a bachelor's degree in English and a minor in business in 1979. During his time in Orangeburg, Batey was a four-year member of the men's golf team.
Coach Batey combined his love of golf with his interest in business, which led him to Classic Golf Management and Sugar Creek Golf and Tennis Center where he served as assistant golf professional. Batey also served as tournament director for City Club Marietta and eventually earned his first job as a head golf professional while working at Mystery Valley Golf Course in Lithonia, GA.
"I am very excited about my first year with the Jaguars," Coach Batey said. "The athletic department has been supportive in fielding a very competitive golf team. We will practice and play diligently and carry ourselves in a way that represents Spelman in a positive fashion."
Coach Batey and his wife Melba have two children. His daughter Jamie, 23, is a graduate of North Carolina State University and his son Cameron, 17, plays on his high school golf team. The Bateys reside in Lilburn, GA.
